I am terrified at the thought of any hate speech laws because hate speech is in the eye of the beholder. And I don’t feel comfortable making the government that beholder. Everyone has a different view of what that does or doesn’t mean — and whatever laws you can put in place to try to silence someone you disagree with can also be used to silence you.

I caught myself being afraid to talk about the Lia Thomas [controversy] last year. I wrote in the book that I would rather talk about this war in Ukraine — this bloody, complicated geopolitical war — than a women’s college swimming competition. That’s great evidence that the way we’re talking about this issue is wrong. But the fear of talking [about a topic] isn’t the same as making someone agree with you. So If there’s someone that gets accused of being a horrible bigot because they talk about an issue in the wrong way, that’s just going to make them dig in their heels in deeper. When you attack people and make them afraid to talk about it, then we won’t be able to have those conversations that help us understand one another.

Timpf, 32, and Friscia, 34, tied the knot on Saturday in a ceremony officiated by Lisa Kennedy Montgomery, who hosts Kennedy on Fox Business. Kat Timpf was born and raised in Detroit, Mich. and attended the nearby Hillsdale College, graduating magna cum laude with a B.A. Hillsdale is notable for developing a core curriculum around Western heritage, as well as for denying financial support from the government, relying instead on private donations to help the college stay afloat. This practice reportedly helped inspire Timpf's belief in libertarianism. In 2017, Timpf was brought on as co-host of Fox News Specialists, and in 2019, she landed her own show, Sincerely, Kat, on the streaming platform Fox Nation. While her career at Fox is what she's best known for, her resume includes a number of other fascinating bullet points.

Kat Timpf is one of the successful young journalists in contemporary America. She has gained a ton of experience working in numerous networks and stations. She disclosed that the incident made her undergo neck surgery.

In March 1954, Clarence “Buck” Stahl and Carlotta May Gates drove from Los Angeles to Las Vegas and got married in a chapel. They each worked in aviation (Buck in sales, Carlotta as a receptionist), had previous marriages, and were strapping, tall, and extremely good looking—California Apollonians out of central casting. It was as conspicuous as it was forbidding, visible from the couple’s house on nearby Hillside Avenue. “This lot was in pure view—every morning, every night,” Carlotta Stahl recalled. Locals called it Pecker Point, presumably because it was a prime makeout venue. For the Stahls, it became the blank screen on which they projected their dreams of a life together, a place to build a future, a family, and a house like no other.

However, she did not reveal details of the operation. She was reminded that Kimmel's child had been diagnosed with a heart problem. Timpf apologised to Kimmel and all Americans for her comments and stated she was not aware of the child's health challenges. While it is indisputable that the journalist rakes a considerable amount of money from her career, there is no official information about her net worth.

The broadcaster flashed her engagement ring for the camera at the time and then quickly moved on to the next topic. Sharing the moment via Instagram, she joked that "hell froze over." Many of Timpf and Friscia's loved ones and close friends were in attendance for their big day, including the journalist's former Fox News colleague Meghan McCain. Free speech is a significant theme in Timpf’s book, and she warns of what happens to discourse when comedy – or any speech – is shut down because of whom it may offend. She points to numerous comedians who have been unfairly canceled or faced cancellation. And she also argues that someone’s intention makes a big difference (or should).

Scientific Info The Oregon Vortex and location of the House of Mystery

house of mystery oregon

Over the years, plenty of dubious visitors have tried to make sense of the strange phenomena that occur at the Vortex and within the House of Mystery. In 1998, magician James Randi used photography and mathematical equations to break down the optical illusions that are utilized at the attraction. In the late 19th century, the Grey Eagle mining company built an assay office in the area of the Vortex to weigh and measure the purity of the gold that miners were digging up nearby. It could be argued that the location along Sardine Creek made the most sense for an outpost because people frequently panned for gold there, but according to the Bend Bulletin, the plot was purposely selected by savvy miners.

The Oregon Vortex is aspherical field of force, half above the ground and half below the ground. The word "vortex" simply means a whirpool of force, like a whirling massof water. Especially one in which a force of suction operates such as awhirlpool or a whirling mass of air or one in the form of a visiblecolumn or spiral such as a tornado. The only exception to this is a fully trained service animal accompanied by a disabled person. There is shaded parking for warm days and a nearby creek where pets and animals may get a drink with supervision.

Golf balls roll uphill, brooms stand on end, and visitors’ height changes from one end of the property to the other. The Oregon Vortex and House of Mystery, located on Sardine Creek in Gold Hill, is one of Oregon’s oldest and most original examples of Roadside Americana. Opened to tourists in 1930, the attraction is the earliest documented mystery spot or gravitational hill in the United States—a place where bubble levels, tape measures, yardsticks, balls that roll uphill, and plumb lines are used to demonstrate the phenomena.

The Phenomena that gives The Oregon Vortex its name are evident throughout the entire area. Inevitably the visitor assumes a posture that inclines toward magnetic north. The corona of The Vortex, as well as the minor vortices, discovered during the continuous study of The Vortex, are among the unique phenomena to be observed here. There’s a place in southern Oregon that seems to blatantly defy the laws of physics, gravity, and perspective, distorting the way we experience reality entirely.

Portland, Oregon

When the very similar Mystery Spot was created in Santa Cruz, California in 1939, Litster sued for copyright violations, but withdrew the suit when it was pointed out that he claimed the Oregon Vortex was a natural phenomenon. But Litster wasn’t the first person to notice something odd about the land. According to That Oregon Life, the Takelma people who are indigenous to the area called the Vortex “Forbidden Ground,” and their horses refused to enter a zone the size of half a football field. Located in the southern Oregon town of Gold Hill, the Oregon Vortex and House of Mystery attract a plethora of curious onlookers every year who want to experience firsthand the strange occurrences that take place in the area.

And they likewise need lots of attention to save the majestic fish. Back then, winter steelhead runs were a festive time for anglers along the Ventura River. They’re both hatched upstream and, as kids, fight their way past bullies down to the ocean, where they fatten up on marine nutrients not available in freshwater. Then they battle their way back upriver to their original hatching waters and spawn a new generation. The steelhead is a rainbow trout that — unlike its freshwater little brother — grows up in the ocean. A private reservation includes an hour long private tour and time to look around the area afterward. Regardless of the truth behind the Oregon Vortex, the attraction brings in thousands of visitors every year who want to see the curiosity for themselves. And for many of them, the mystery surrounding the vortex, whether it be scientific or paranormal, remains just that — a mystery. Litster was a geologist, physicist, and mining engineer born in Scotland in 1886 to a British foreign diplomat.

The same effect can be seen in Pennsylvania's Laurel Caverns and at Santa Cruz, California's Mystery Spot. Oregon Vortex is also famous for "height change" as the relative height of the two people changes varying on where they stand. It also shares similar properties with the mystery spot located outside St.Ignace in the upper peninsula of Michigan. The Cooper family also claims that the Native Americans thought this space was forbidden ground, and their horses would not enter it, though local Native Americans may say otherwise.

In the early 20th century, a small office built for a local mining company began sliding down a hill, eventually resting at an odd angle to its foundation. For one, balls may appear to roll uphill because the walls and floor of the House of Mystery are tilted at different angles. The distorted background alters visitors’ perspective, but in reality the laws of gravity remain fully intact.

"The mysterious 'growing person' phenomenon is the one everyone goes away talking about, because they can carry this one with them in the form of photographs — and would the camera lie? Yes." James Randi wrote. Alongside the fact that people are inclined to overestimate the steepness of a slope, and you get some pretty genuinely freaky effects, what's known as a "gravity hill". And despite Litster’s years of research into the Vortex, it appears that he may have been well-aware of the truth behind the illusions. According to the Oregon Encyclopedia, when a similar “Mystery Spot” opened in Santa Cruz, California in 1939, Litster sued them for copyright violations. Of course, Hansen isn’t the only one who is skeptical of the physics-defying claims put forth by tour guides at the Oregon Vortex.

The Native Americanscalled the area the "Forbidden Ground", a place to be shunned. Many years before TheHouse of Mystery was built it was noted that unusual conditions existed there. Butit was not until well into the 20th century that any effort was madetoward a scientific analysis of the disturbance. Similarly, the magical "changing of heights" when standing in different locations can be explained with optical illusions. The Oregon Vortex is a glimpse of a strange world where the improbable is the commonplace and everyday physical facts are reversed.

The accumulated Notes and Data, written by John Litster, contains 35 pictures, diagrams, and illustrations along with other information relating specifically to The Oregon Vortex is available to all visitors. Atlas Obscura has a tradition of exploring the stories of women who changed the world, from wildlife biologists and mountain climbers to Civil War spies and tattoo artists. Oregon is filled to the brim with (allegedly) haunted and otherwise unsettling spots. There are also other, less-usually haunted spots, like Lithia Park, in Ashland, where people report three different apparitions on the regular. Lucky for us, there's no shortage of weirdness in the beautiful state of Oregon.

Countless examples of this have appeared in both photographs and videos showing two people of different heights standing side-by-side. One taller individual and one shorter individual stand a few feet apart from one another, but when the two switch positions, they also switch heights. The one who was originally taller is now either shorter or the same size as the smaller individual. However, aside from the dilapidated shack that sits on the property, there are no physical markers that would suggest that there is anything strange about the small plot of land.

While he opened up the Oregon Vortex and “House of Mystery” for public exploration in 1930, he continued to conduct his own research on the seemingly paranormal phenomena that took place on the land until his death in 1959. But despite decades of testing, Litster never solved the mystery of the Vortex. By the early 1900s, the post had been abandoned, and the assay building began to fall into disrepair.

Cinema of Horrors Haunted House

Litster called it the “Vortex” simply because he believed an invisible sphere surrounding the area created a “whirlpool” of unexplainable force. But for any steelhead to survive in the Ventura River, that dam has to be smashed and less water diverted. The final death knell for Ventura River steelhead was construction of the larger Casitas Dam near Oak View in 1959. That reservoir is partly fed with Ventura River water, siphoned through a canal below Matilija Dam. And somewhere at home in a shoebox of treasures is a prized photo of my father and his fishing buddy holding up the two gorgeous natural wonders.

The Oregon Vortex is a glimpse of a strange world where the improbable is the commonplace and everyday physical facts are reversed. It is an area of naturally occurring visual and perceptual phenomena, which can be captured on film. No matter your education or profession you will find a challenge to all your accepted theories. Seven Days a Week. The Oregon Vortex is a roadside attraction located in Gold Hill, Oregon, in the United States. Odd angles seem to create an illusion of objects seemingly rolling uphill.

They knew that measurements weren’t accurate within the Vortex, and they wanted to take advantage of the naive by fudging numbers in their favor. Among the strange goings-on at the site are people not appearing to stand straight, tending to orient themselves towards north naturally; objects can be seen to roll uphill; and people appearing to be taller when standing in certain locations. The House of Mysteryitself was originally an assay office and later used for tool storage, built by theOld Grey Eagle Mining Company in 1904. But the history of the surrounding area,The Oregon Vortex, goes way back to the time of the Native Americans.Their horses would not come into the affected area, so they wouldn't.

Chuckwalla National Monument would protect swath of California desert and preserve a sacred land

When a person within the 165-foot radius of the Vortex walks toward magnetic north, they appear to shrink to a shorter height, and when one walks toward magnetic south, they appear to grow taller. Can a few dozen native fish survive and propagate in watersheds occupied by 22 million humans? The Santa Clara and Santa Ynez rivers also once teemed with steelhead.

"Considering the orientation of the place, what this means in practice is they 'lean uphill'," one investigator into the topic wrote for Oregonians for Science and Reason. "This, after all, is only sensible behavior for a tall, bipedal animal that is trying to avoid falling."

Clowning for Novices: History and Practice With Rose Carver

Meanwhile, the phenomenon that shocks visitors the most is the apparent height change that takes place within the Vortex’s force field. Well-informed tour guides demonstrate this occurrence to curious travelers who make the trek to the rural roadside attraction. Founded in 1930 by John Litster, the roadside attraction continues to stun visitors with its lack of adherence to the most basic rules of physics. Guests stand at an angle, balls appear to roll uphill, and gravity seems to be merely a suggestion. The Oregon Vortex is a place where the rules of gravity and physics don’t appear to apply.

These pictures have the potentially confusing background lines and angles ofThe House of Mystery cut out. The change of height is stilljust as visible without the background. As another person, on a level platform, recedes from you towards magnetic south, they appear taller.

Constantine: The House of Mystery Release Date Announced

constantine the house of mystery

The Martian Manhunter was again relegated to back-up status during this time. Animation continues to glean beloved characters from DC’s robust library for the popular DC Showcase line of animated shorts, this time highlighting characters as diverse as Constantine, Kamandi, the Losers and Blue Beetle in this new compilation. The first issue under Orlando would be a reprint issue of old horror/suspense stories, as the new direction would truly begin with #175 (July–August 1968). The issue would introduce a new figure to the series, Cain, the "able care taker" of the House of Mystery who would introduce nearly all stories that would run in the series before its cancellation.[5] Cain would also host the spin-off humor series Plop!

Blue Beetle

And later become a recurring character in Blue Devil and The Sandman. DC's Vertigo imprint began a new ongoing series in May 2008, written by Lilah Sturges and Bill Willingham. It features at least one different story each issue, told by people trapped in a "purgatory-like house".[15][16] The series ended in October 2011 with issue #42. In terms of the release’s audio and video quality, it’s a pretty good overall presentation. Outside of occasional artifacting and some macroblocking, it’s a fine looking transfer, with any blemishes barely a noticeable blip. The audio is just as good, if not better, with every word of dialogue and beat of action coming through crystal clear and no issues whatsoever.

Home Entertainment, and inspired by characters and stories from the iconic DC Universe, the all-new quartet of DC Showcase shorts are produced by Rick Morales (Mortal Kombat Legends franchise, Injustice). Jim Krieg is producer, and Sam Register is executive producer. Please note the updates above do not list the regular near-daily updates across the site, which include updates to assorted releases, image galleries, backstage/extra content and more. The updates also do not include content posted on Twitter and YouTube. The House of Mystery is the name of several horror, fantasy, and mystery comics anthologies published by DC Comics. It is also the name of the titular setting of the series.

You can follow him on Twitter and Bluesky at @JulesChinGreene. The Losers was directed by Milo Neuman, who also directed the Blue Beetle short, and the two couldn’t be more different in tone. Blue Beetle is a fun send-up of 1960’s superhero cartoons, particularly one about a marvelous arachnid.

Running Time

As such, the creative team immersed themselves in the character’s classic comics. That being said, to quickly touch on the short’s finale (while keeping details as vague as possible), it can be read a couple different ways. In one way, it does act as it’s own solid wrap with that typical House of Mystery twist fans of the comic likely remember. Another way, however, is that the finale could be read as a hint toward something bigger on the horizon. The series would not be complete without the fabulous artwork of Riley Rossmo.

CONSTANTINE and all related characters and elements are ™ and © DC. IGN exclusively revealed a new trailer for the upcoming anthology this past weekend. Yet we knew that the new Constantine short was coming after Warner Bros. teased it as part of DC Fandome 2021.

Rossmo invents an entirely new visual language for Constantine that’s utterly infectious on the page. The art’s exaggerated proportions and expressions lend a playfulness to Constantine’s supernatural experiences. The House of Mystery appears mainly in various Vertigo titles, especially those tied into Neil Gaiman's Sandman; it has appeared briefly in Resurrection Man. Something called the House of Mystery appeared in 52 #18, where it seems to have been used for some time as a base for a team of detectives called the Croatoan Society, which counts both Detective Chimp and Ralph Dibny among its members. It is unclear if the Croatoan's House of Mystery is meant to be the same as the original House of Mystery, a post-Infinite Crisis version of the original House of Mystery, or simply a different location with the same name. Cain's name appeared on this house's mailbox, implying some sort of connection to the original House.

First series

It’s an approach to the character and material that almost certainly wouldn’t have been taken had Blue Beetle been a full-length movie rather than a short. But that’s always been the great thing about DC Showcase. The creative teams are free to experiment and take risks, with the results almost always speaking for themselves.

If you love this book, then you can catch more adventures with Constantine in Tynion’s Justice League Dark series that followed this one. In the mid-1960s, the series was revamped to include superhero stories. From The House of Mystery #143 (June 1964) to 155 (December 1966), "J'onn J'onzz, the Manhunter from Mars" headlined the book, as his back-up feature from Detective Comics was moved to The House of Mystery. This was followed with the introduction of "Dial H for Hero" in issue #156 (January 1966),[3] which took over as headliner until issue #173 (March–April 1968).

In 1986–1987, DC comics published a new series, Elvira's House of Mystery. One issue of this series, issue #3, was released without Comics Code Approval and contained significant implied nudity, but subsequent editorial comments in later issues stated that the experiment in releasing an unapproved issue was not considered successful. James Tynion IV, of course, would go on to write Batman, where he had a hand in creating characters such as Punchline, Clownhunter, Ghost-Maker, the Gardener and Miracle Molly. Tynion is also known for his horror stories, with The Nice House on the Lake being one of the most haunting comics I’ve ever read.
